Our Roasting Guide

At Fish Lake Coffee, our devotion to the roast degree of our beans mirrors our commitment to excellence in every cup. Below, we describe our approach to roasting, ensuring every sip brings a unique and satisfying experience.

Woodland Roast

Roast Scale Level: Medium

Nudging into the onset of the “second crack,” our Woodland Roast balances reduced acidity with emerging sweetness, a testament to the natural sugars caramelizing. This roast goes beyond the edge of light and veers towards medium, embodying Fish Lake Coffee’s ideal roast level for a broad array of beans.

Twilight Roast

Roast Scale Level: Dark

Entering the realm of the “second crack,” the Twilight Roast sees the coffee’s original acidity waning, replaced by a burgeoning sweetness and a richer body. This roast marks the beginning of a roast-dominant flavor, subtly overshadowing the bean’s inherent notes.

Midnight Roast

Roast Scale Level: French / Italian

As the “second crack” diminishes, the Midnight Roast pushes boundaries, where the coffee’s nuanced and aromatic traits give way to robust profiles of caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits, enveloped in a dark, bold essence. It’s the pinnacle of our dark roast recommendation, offering a hearty, full-bodied experience with a narrowed flavor spectrum.

Eclipse Roast

Roast Scale Level: Espresso

The Eclipse Roast ventures into the extreme, with beans darkened to a very deep brown, bordering on charred. This intensity is not for every coffee or every palate, as it prominently features the roast itself, eclipsing the bean’s original flavors. While some may seek this bold, singular taste, we approach this degree with caution, favoring its use sparingly.

Brazil

As the world’s leading coffee producer, Brazil is celebrated for its diverse palette of coffee flavors. Brazilian beans range from chocolatey and nutty profiles to more subtle, fruity undertones, catering to a wide spectrum of coffee enthusiasts. The country’s vast coffee plantations ensure a consistent supply of beans that form the backbone of many coffee blends around the globe.

Colombia

Colombia’s coffee is renowned for its exceptionally smooth and mild character, striking a perfect balance in taste. These beans often carry a gentle nuttiness, complemented by a light, fruity acidity, making Colombian coffee a staple for those who appreciate a well-rounded cup. The nation’s commitment to high-quality coffee production shines through in every sip.

Ethiopia

Hailing from the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopian beans are treasured for their complex flavor profiles, ranging from enchanting floral and fruity notes to intriguing winey accents. The diverse climates and landscapes of Ethiopia foster the growth of beans with a distinctive brightness and acidity, offering a truly unique coffee drinking experience.

Indonesia

Indonesian coffees, especially those originating from Sumatra, are celebrated for their deep, full-bodied richness and pronounced earthy, woody flavors. The unique processing methods employed in the region, such as wet-hulling, contribute significantly to the distinctive taste profiles of Indonesian beans. This results in coffees that are as memorable as they are flavorful, embodying the essence of Indonesia’s rich coffee culture.

Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea’s coffee showcases a rare blend of rich chocolate and nutty flavors with subtle fruity notes. Grown in the Eastern Highlands, the unique climate and soil contribute to its distinct character. Both washed and unwashed processing methods enhance its luxurious, yet familiar taste profile, making it a hidden gem for coffee enthusiasts.

Vietnam

Known predominantly for its robusta coffee, Vietnam’s contribution to the coffee world is characterized by the strong, bold flavors of its beans. Vietnamese coffee often presents a slightly bitter taste with dark, chocolaty nuances, making it a favorite for those who prefer a more intense coffee. As the world’s top producer of robusta, Vietnam plays a crucial role in supplying beans for espresso blends and instant coffee products.
